With the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament upcoming in a week, Grambling’s softball team made a statement Wednesday.
By winning 9-6 at Prairie View, the Lady Tigers became the first SWAC foe in 2021 to win a series from the Lady Panthers. Doing so at Prairie View sends an even more encouraging signal that Grambling can be a contender in what shapes up as a wide-open conference tournament.
Grambling won the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader 6-3, but dropped the nightcap 6-5. Stacked together with Wednesday’s outcome, GSU was oh, so close to sweeping the series.
The regular season ends with Grambling 12-16 overall and 9-8 in the SWAC. Prairie View (15-14, 12-6) shares the league lead in wins with Jackson State, but is percentage points behind Texas Southern (just 8-3 in SWAC play) in the West Division.
A four-run sixth inning provided the winning margin for the Lady Tigers Wednesday, boosting them ahead 8-3. Cameron Ellis lashed a bases-loaded two-run single and India Wells scored on an error ending the play. Ellis came in on a base hit by Anaiyah Fultz, who had three of Grambling’s 13 hits.
The SWAC Tournament begins next Tuesday in Gulfport, Mississippi.
