With the start of football season around the corner, this is the 11th of a 12-part series of season previews on the Louisiana Tech opponents for the upcoming season. Tech will host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Friday, Nov. 19 at Joe Aillet Stadium. Kickoff time is 7 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
2020 Record: 3-7 (2-4 in C-USA)
2020 Bowl Appearance: None
Head Coach: Will Hall (1st season)
Last Meeting (LA Tech 31, Southern Miss 30 in 2020): Louisiana Tech quarterback Luke Anthony found Griffin Hebert in the back of the end zone on fourth down for a 4-yard TD pass that sent the Bulldogs back to Ruston victorious with a 31-30 win. Trailing 30-24 with just 21 seconds remaining, Anthony stepped up in the pocket and fired a strike to Hebert (photo above), whose nifty footwork came down just in bounds in a play that was originally ruled out of bounds, but that was overturned with instant replay. Anthony tossed three TDs – two to Hebert – and Tech overcame a 17-point third quarter deficit to pick up the win in the season opener for the Bulldogs. All three of Anthony’s TDs came in the final 20 minutes of the game. True freshman Tyler Grubbs recorded 16 tackles in his first collegiate game as the Bulldogs won despite being minus over 20 players from their two-deep due to contact tracing.
Southern Miss Outlook: After a turbulent season that saw Southern Miss go through three different head coaches in a three-month span, the Golden Eagles are looking forward to a fresh start under Will Hall. USM looks to replace quarterback Jack Abraham, who moved on to his fourth college (starting with LA Tech and now ending up at Mississippi State) after passing for 1200 yards and seven scores last season. Running back Frank Gore returns after a solid season that saw him rush for 708 yards and two scores while wide receiver Jason Brownlee is also back in the black and gold after leading USM with 34 catches for 610 yards and five scores. Defensively, USM returns its top two tackles in linebacker Hayes Maples (91 tackles) and defensive back Malik Shorts (81 tackles).
