PRESEASON PRACTICE BEGAN: Monday, shorts and helmets conditioning workouts all week

PRESEASON FULL PADS PRACTICE BEGINS: Monday, Aug. 9

PRACTICE TIME: 6 p.m. daily

SCRIMMAGE: at Jonesboro-Hodge, Friday, Aug. 20, 6 p.m.

JAMBOREE: at Rayville, Friday, Aug. 27, 6 p.m.

SEASON OPENER: Friday, Sept. 3, at Liberty Magnet (Baton Rouge), 7 p.m.

COACHING STAFF: Matt Middleton, head coach; Mark Ware, defensive coordinator; Andy Long, OL; Jacob Angevine, Shane Mabou, Trey Long, Justin Chelette, Josh Robinson.

NOTES: The Cougars expect to have about 40 players as they begin their first season under Matt Middleton, the head coach at West Ouachita since 2016, and three other high schools previously, including Caldwell Parish … Middleton, a student assistant coach at Louisiana Tech in 2001, was also a highly successful college offensive coordinator at Arkansas-Monticello and Central Arkansas … the Cougars will be throwing much more than before, he says … Cedar Creek has a young roster with only three seniors, along with some very promising underclassmen … Middleton played for Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame coach Don Shows at West Monroe HS … Middleton’s father was an assistant coach under Shows … the Cougars’ offensive line coach, Andy Long, coached Middleton and is a longtime family friend coming out of retirement and coaching at the age of 75.
