Ruston, La. – Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Cumbie has added Daniel Johnson as the Assistant Director of Football Sports Performance for the Bulldog football team.

Johnson arrives in Ruston after spending this past fall in Lubbock as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Red Raiders.

“Danny brings great energy and enthusiasm to this program,” said Cumbie. “He will serve these players and lead them in the weight room to be the best they can be on and off the field. You will quickly see Danny’s passion for his players and this profession. We’re fired up to have him as a Louisiana Tech Bulldog.”

Johnson assisted with the on-field development of the defensive front seven and skill position players while with the Red Raiders. He assisted with the implementation of the Functional Range Conditioning program for the Red Raiders different developmental groups.

“Joining Head Coach Sonny Cumbie and the Bulldog family is an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Johnson. “The goal is to be the best version of myself day in and out for this program. I am excited for what is in store for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.”

Johnson spent the spring of 2021 as an assistant strength and condition coach at Houston before moving on to Texas Tech. While with the Cougars, Johnson was responsible for the daily nutritional needs of the football team while assisting with educational services for the football student-athletes.

Before his time in Houston, Johnson served as a graduate assistant at the University of Toledo and as an intern at Mississippi State where he aided in all aspects of football strength and conditioning.

Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State in 2018. Johnson played football at Itawamba (Miss.) Community College, where he earned all-state and all-region honors as a linebacker. Johnson went on to play at Faulkner (Ala.) University and earned first-team all-league and was named a team captain.
