Ruston resident remembers previous Peach Fests, anticipates this weekend

Rebecca Lewis Smart has been a lifetime Lincoln Parish resident and frequent participant of all things Peach Festival — in fact, one could say she is peach royalty, as she was crowned Princess Peach as a child. Now, though, with her own three children with husband Daniel, she is looking forward to seeing the Peach Festival in a whole new light.

“Lillian is obsessed with the Peach Festival,” she said of her eldest child. “She asks me all the time, ‘When it’s happening again?'”

Smart said she and her family always attended Peach Fest, which was one of her favorite Ruston experiences.

“I remember attending every year as a child,” Smart said. “It was always so fun to walk across to Railroad Park from Lewis and Company. I really loved all the peach food around town, too. The Roasted Bean always had peach smoothies that were to die for. I also lived for The Street Dance. I can still remember Dorothy Prime belting out ‘Mustang Sally’ the year it was held in Graham Shopping Center.”

Now, with her own family, Smart said she hopes her children enjoy the annual festival as much as she still does.

“I hope they remember it being a fun, family event,” she said.

Smart is part of the Peach Festival committee and has worked with the group for a year to plan the events. She said one of the important aspects of the Peach Festival is its family-friendly atmosphere.

“I think it’s so important to have an event everyone feels comfortable attending,” she said. “We are really excited to be able to offer free admission until 5 p.m. It can get expensive to pay a cover fee for a family.”
