Six injured in Bernice incident

One man was shot and five others injured when they were struck by a vehicle at a Saturday night gathering in Bernice.

At about 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Bernice Police Department contacted the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office for assistance at a bonfire gathering. Bernice PD reported several people had been struck by a vehicle and were injured. Before deputies arrived on the scene, Bernice officers also discovered a man nearby suffering from a gunshot wound to his head.

UPSO deputies arrived on scene with Bernice PD and provided first aid to the injured persons. It was learned a total of five persons were struck by a vehicle which was found crashed in a nearby ditch. The five injured pedestrians were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Their injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. 

Preliminary investigation revealed the gunshot victim was the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrians. He was transferred to a Shreveport trauma center with serious injuries. 

The crime scene was secured and UPSO’s investigators and crime scene deputies continue to investigate this incident. No suspect information is currently available, but UPSO intends to release more details later.
