Suspected DWI refuses blood analysis

A Louisiana State Police Trooper arrested a Ruston man early Sunday morning after the driver allegedly ran a red light early Sunday morning.

Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, the trooper was stopped on La. Highway 33 at Interstate 20. when he saw a vehicle make a turn as the traffic light turned red. The vehicle’s right tires left the roadway while making the turn. A records check showed the vehicle had an expired license plates and no insurance.

The driver, Trenton Council, 30, had extremely poor balance, spoke with slurred speech, and had no driver’s license. He refused to undergo field sobriety tests.

Council was arrested and taken to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center where he refused to provide a breath sample for analysis as required by state law. A criminal history check showed Council had a previous DWI arrest in 2020. Council stated he refused that test and was going to refuse this test.

A search warrant was obtained from a Third District Court judge to draw Council’s blood for analysis. However, he would not consent to the blood draw at the Northern Louisiana Medical Center.

Council was booked for second offense DWI, resisting an officer, no driver’s license, running a red light, expired inspection sticker, improper lane usage, and expired license plate. Bail was set at $3,500.
