Former LSU golf standout Sam Burns, of Choudrant, withdrew midway through the first round of Thurday’s PGA Championship at Kiwah Island, South Carolina, citing a back injury.

Burns’ manager Brett Falkoff told The Golf Channel that Burns slipped teeing off on the fifth hole and re-aggravated a previous lower back injury.

Currently ranked as the No. 26 golfer in the world, Burns left with a 4-over 41 that included a triple bogey and a double bogey before he leaving the course after suffering the injury.

The 24-year-old won the Valspar Championship three weeks ago, then finished second at the AT&T Byron Nelson last week.
