Market Assistant Job Description:
 
The Ruston Farmers Market (RFM) Market Assistant is an independent contractor who oversees and manages the operations of the RFM and reports to NLFF’s Vice President, Operations. Required hours are Saturdays from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m., and all other work is completed at the discretion of the coordinator. Weekly hours range from 7-15 hours a week, averaging 10 hours a week.  
An ideal candidate for the position will:

  • Have reliable transportation to and from the RFM building 
  • Be highly organized and dependable 
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Be able to make decisions and solve problems independently 
  • Compile basic financial information using Excel
  • Use judgment and discretion as to when problems or issues must be addressed by the board
  • Maintain a positive and respectful working relationship with the Market Coordinator, vendors, the board, volunteers, and customers
  • Produce market data reports as required for North Louisiana Farm Fresh Board

 
Job duties for the position include, but are not limited to:
Market Operations (Saturday market)

  • Assist Market Coordinator on Saturdays 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Assist in vendor setup for best traffic flow
  • Ensure appropriate standards and safety
  • Assess needs of customers and vendors for that day
  • Assist with special events for the day (music, guest speakers, contests, etc.)
  • Direct traffic for vendors backing in
  • Assist in setup and teardown of the market
  • Collect vendor fees
  • Collect sales data from vendors
  • Perform SNAP transactions and reconciliation
  • Assist in collecting metrics for grants

RFM Mid-Week Market (when in operation)

  • Assist Market Coordinator in sending vendor newsletter for Tuesday market
  • Staff Tuesday market from 430-7:40 p.m. as needed (including opening building, setting up tables, managing SNAP, etc.)

 
Vendor Relations

  • Assist with site visits to vendors as needed
  • Provide recommendations to the Board for any needed revisions to the vendor application and vendor rules and regulations 

 
General

  • Provide overall assistance to Market Coordinator as needed, taking over his/her primary duties during any Coordinator absence
  • Assist with identification of building maintenance needs and inventory stocking needs
  • Clean the RFM building, including bathrooms, on a weekly basis and before events
  • Other duties as required
