North Texas Outlook: For the second straight season, North Texas graduated one of its most prolific offensive weapons in program history. Following the departure of quarterback Mason Fine after the 2019 football season, North Texas now must deal with the graduation of record-setting wide receiver Jaelon Darden who was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers (this ended the longest draft drought by an FBS program dating back to 2004). Darden, who caught three TDs in North Texas’ 42-31 loss to Tech in 2020, caught 74 passes for 19 TDs in only nine games last season. The Mean Green return their one-two punch in the backfield with DeAndre Torrey (656 yards, 6 TDs) and Oscar Adaway (572 yards, 3 TDs), who both average 5.8 yards per carry in 2020. QB Austin Aune (1650 yards, 13 TDs) also returns after splitting time last season behind center. North Texas struggled mightily on the defensive side of the football last year, surrendering 42.8 points per game and over 520 yards of offense a night. The Mean Green allowed over 6 yards per rushing attempt as opponents gained 270 yards per game on the ground (32 rushing TDs allowed on the season). North Texas does return its top two tacklers in linebacker KD Davis (75 tackles, 5.5 TFL) and safety Makyle Sanders (68 tackles, 2 interceptions).
