More academic accolades arrive for Tech student-athletes

While competition has taken a break this summer for Louisiana Tech student-athletes, academic recognition has not. The latest honors arrived Friday for golf and football team members.

GOLF: Louisiana Tech has been named a Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team.

The Bulldogs registered a 3.33 GPA during the 2020-21 campaign. The All-Academic distinction is awarded to teams that earn a 3.0 GPA or better over the academic school year.

Junior James Swash was voted First Team Academic All-District 6 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) after earning a cumulative 3.30 GPA in his three years at Louisiana Tech.

Tech also had seven Bulldogs named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll during the 2020-21 season in Swash, senior Mac Murphy, juniors Blake Blaser and J.C. Wigglesworth, sophomores Hunter Battles and Lake Juban, and freshman Will Patrick.

FOOTBALL: Bulldogs’ junior offensive lineman Abraham Delfin was named to the Conference USA Preseason Academic Watch List. One student-athlete from each of the conference’s 14 member institutions was recognized for their academic prowess ahead of the 2021 season.

In June, Delfin was voted First Team Academic All-District 6 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He graduated summa cum laude with a degree in construction engineering technology in May and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in engineering and technology management. Delfin registered a 3.91 cumulative GPA and has been named to the AD Honor Roll 12 times, Dean’s List 12 times, President’s List seven times and the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll four times. He is a four-time C-USA Academic Medalist and earned a spot on the C-USA Football All-Academic Team in 2020.

On the field, Delfin was named All-Conference USA honorable mention for his work in the 2020 season. The Plaquemine native started in all 10 games at right guard where he was part of an offensive front that ranked first in C-USA and second in the FBS in fourth down conversions at 88.9 percent (16-of-18). Delfin helped the offense rank fourth in C-USA and 53rd in the FBS in red zone offense at 84.6 percent (33-of-39). He assisted the Bulldogs in averaging 315.8 yards of total offense, including a 216.6 passing average.
