Six teams remain in contention entering today’s third round of play in the 2021 Dixie Debs World Series softball tournament at the Ruston Sports Complex, and the only two unbeaten squads didn’t have to travel far to get there.
The host team, Ruston, and the Louisiana state champions from Alexandria are unblemished entering their winner’s bracket collision today at 6 p.m. on Field 3.
Both teams will turn right around and play again tonight at 8, when both will be one win away from Tuesday’s 6 p.m. championship round.
The Ruston-Alexandria winner plays the winner of the Georgia-Virginia elimination contest on Field 3. Georgia and Virginia square off for survival today at 4 on Field 3.
The Ruston-Alexandria loser will move over to Field 4 and battle the winner of the North Carolina-South Carolina elimination game that will take place on that field at 6 p.m.
The two teams that walk away winners in the 8 p.m. game tonight will meet in the championship round Tuesday evening. If the unbeaten team prevails in that Tuesday 6 p.m. contest, the Series ends; a final championship game will be played at 8 if the previously undefeated team falls.
Ruston opened World Series action Saturday afternoon with a 10-0 romp over Tennessee to cap Day One competition. The local team surprised defending World Series champion Georgia 9-4 on Sunday afternoon.
The Louisiana state champs rolled over Alabama 16-1 Saturday, then were bad news for the Carolinas on Sunday. The Alexandria-based team topped South Carolina 6-3, then wrapped up Day Two’s action with a 5-0 blanking of North Carolina.
Dixie Debs competition involves girls ages 16-18. The World Series is being contested at Complex 6, with single-day tickets $7 each. Tournament updates are being posted on the Dixie Debs World Series 2021-Ruston Facebook page.
