Tech’s Sam Murphy opens play today in 121st U.S. Amateur

Louisiana Tech fifth-year senior golfer Sam Murphy tees off today in the 121st U.S. Amateur Championship.

The week-long tournament in Western Pennsylvania runs through the finals on Sunday. The field of 312 golfers will compete at the Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club (Par 70 – 7,254 yards) and the Longue Vue Club (Par 70 – 6,647 yards).

The U.S. Amateur will be broadcast on Wednesday on Peacock from 2-3 p.m. CT and on the Golf Channel from 3-5 p.m.

Murphy qualified to compete in the 121st U.S. Amateur after placing second in the qualifying round in his hometown of Decatur, Ala., on July 5.

Murphy finished the qualifier with a six-under (70-66=136, 2nd) and carded seven birdies in the two rounds. He also registered two eagles with one on hole 13 in the first round and another on hole 16 in the second.

Murphy was named second team all-Louisiana in 2020-21 after competing in all 10 events as a senior. He won his first individual intercollegiate tournament after finishing the LaTour Intercollegiate with a combined -7 (69-68=137) and placed in the top-20 in seven of the Tech’s nine tournaments. Murphy was second on the team with a stroke average of 72.72 over 25 rounds and finished the season with 12 rounds at or under par.
