Cougars get first test under Middleton at JHHS

MATCHUP: Cedar Creek Cougars vs. Jonesboro-Hodge Tigers

WHERE/WHEN: Caldwell-Peacock Stadium, Jonesboro, 6 p.m. today

RECORDS: Preseason scrimmage.

LAST GAME: Last game was in the 2020 season for both teams.

NOTES: The Cedar Creek defense is the strong point of the team in preseason camp, but new coach Matt Middleton is very optimistic that the offense could be good when the Cougars gel in their new scheme, which will put the ball in the air a lot more often than in past years. Connor Norris and Jackson Mauck are competing for placekicking duties … Jed Worthy is looking sharp at tailback, and his younger brother Grey is also playing well as a backup … the offensive line has been solid.

COUGARS COACH MATT MIDDLETON SAYS: “We only have three seniors, but they are three really good ones who have played a lot of football. We’ll be fairly young but down the road that could be an advantage. Our front seven, defensive line and linebackers, have had a great camp. Offensively, we’re getting closer.

“We have some skill kids at receiver who can really stretch the field. If we can stay healthy, we have a chance to be pretty electric.”

NEXT UP: The Cougars go to Rayville for their jamboree action next Friday. Cedar Creek travels to Baton Rouge for its season opener Sept. 3 at Liberty Magnet.
