Aggies, Cougars fall in softball playoffs

ANACOCO  — The Choudrant softball team got off a strong start it couldn’t sustain on Thursday as the Lady Aggies fell 4-3 at Anacoco in the regional round of the Cass B Louisiana High School Athletics Association playoffs.

Zoey Smith’s triple plated Elissa Guillotte in the opening inning to give the Lady Aggies a 1-0 advantage they increased to 3-0 in the third inning with Smith racking up two more runs batted in a single that scored Grayson Pylant and Guillotte.

But the Lady Indians battled back in the bottom half of the third as Jaiden Craft’s two-run homer cut the Choudrant lead to 3-2.

“(CHS pitcher) Holly (Bennett) didn’t give up a hit in the first two innings, but then that home run in the third changed momentum and gave it to Anacoco.” CHS coach Wayne Antley said. “They just seemed to keep feeding off the energy from that one hit and built on it.”

The Lady Indians moved on top in the fifth inning after Brooklyn Bryant tripled before scoring on a triple hit by Ana Davis, who soon after scored on a single by Bailey Davis.

Choudrant finished the season at 23-7 in its first season with Antley at the helm.

Antley said he was pleased with his first season guiding the Lady Aggies but is already looking forward to next season with everyone except for the lone CHS senior – Pylant – expected to return.

“It’s a good team and we learned a lot about each other this season,” Antley said. “And we can learn from, and build on, that experience we gained this year. This is still a fairly young team and has the potential to be good and continue to get better in the future, so we’re already looking in that direction.”

Anacoco went on to defeat second-seeded Bell City 8-4 on Saturday and will next take on sixth-seeded Oak Hill at 4 p.m. Friday at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
