Bourn highlights big day for Cedar Creek powerlifting team

Avery Bourn won her weight class en route to being named teh Most Outstanding Lifter on the girls side during the North DeSoto powerlifting meet held Saturday.

Bourn was one of five Creek girls who won their respective weight class as the Lady Cougars also took home the team title with 51 points, edging D’Arbonne Woods who finished as the runner-up.

Cooper Greer highlighted the Cougar boys lifters, winning the 123-pound class.

“It was an amazing day for all of our kids on Saturday,” said head coach Jacob Angevine. “Usually we weigh in the night before meets so the kids can refuel, but with us being so far from North Desoto I made the decision for our kids to get better rest. It was the first time for them to weigh in the morning of and then compete, and this was the first big-time meet for a lot of them.

“I was nervous to see the results, but we have a bunch of fighters in our program who love to compete. They had a great day.”

Bourn’s three-lift total was 880 pounds, claiming the 220-pound weight class.

“It was fun for Avery and I to jokingly poke fun at her older sister, Ashlyn (who graduated last year and was a part of the last three state title teams),” said Angevine. “Avery was the first of her sisters to achieve that feat.”

In addition to Bourn, Cedar Creek saw eight of the 11 female competitors reach the podium, including first place performances by Joanie Cannon, Catherine Williams, Gia Fernandez, and Kate Harris. Kenna Williams and Bella DiGiovanni both finished second while Jillian Ramsey reached the podium with a third-place finish.

“Our girl’s team showed a lot of grit and determination,” said Angevine.

Greer was joined by teammate Jackson Bullock, who recorded a new PR (personal record) with a three-lift total of 730 pounds. Kamden Hardman registered a PR in the deadlift at 315 pounds.

Northwood-Shreveport and Haughton finished one-two on the boys side.
