A Ruston man was arrested last week after he was stopped on the Louisiana Tech campus after officers saw him armed with a hatchet and erratically swinging two long objects that could be used for as weapons.
Jonathan Alonzo, 40, was seen just after midnight Jan. 8 walking along Tech Drive. Alonzo had two long objects, one in each hand. He was swinging them erratically, according to an officer’s report. Officers saw the objects were a metal rod and a wooden staff each about four to five feet long. Alonso also had a hatchet on his waistband.
Tech Police attempted to make contact with Alonzo, who refused to stop and turned around and began walking south on Tech Drive. Despite repeated commands, Alonzo refused to stop, stating, “I didn’t do anything wrong.”
After repeated commands to stop, Alonzo walked approximately 100 yards and stopped in the grass near LA Tech tennis facility and knelt and held the staffs in a defensive manner across his body. He refused to put the potential weapons down despite repeated commands to do so.
Alonzo said, “if I’m getting shot, then y’all are coming, too.” He then stood up and backed away from the officers, holding the staff in a defensive position. A Taser was deployed, and Alonzo was taken into custody. Marijuana and a grinder were found in his jacket pocket.
Alonso was given an opportunity to disclose any additional contraband in his possession before being transported to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center. He did not disclose anything, but detention center staff found a small bag of marijuana in his pants pocket. He was booked for possession of marijuana, resisting an officer, and introduction of contraband into a correctional facility.
