Generator Safety
Portable standby generators can come in handy during long-term power outages. However, improper use can be dangerous.
Follow these tips to use portable generators safely:
1. Turn your main breaker off before using a portable generator to avoid back-feeding electricity onto electric lines. This keeps linemen safe as they work to restore electricity in the area.
2. Use heavy-duty extension cords to connect appliances to the outlets on the generator.
3. Operate it outdoors in an area with plenty of ventilation. Never run a generator in a home or garage. Generators give off deadly carbon monoxide.
4. Turn the generator on before plugging in appliances. Once the generator is running, turn your appliances and lights on one at a time to avoid overloading the unit.
5. Be sure the generator is turned off and cool before fueling it.
6. Keep children and pets away from portable generators. Many generator components are hot enough to burn you during operation.
