RUSTON, La. — Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker is encouraging families to continue to exercise caution during the current winter storm in our parish and said that the Civic Center will serve as a warming station only starting at 2 p.m. today.
Walker also said that Lincoln Parish’s Homeland Security Office will be opening a warming station only at 2 p.m. at the Ruston Civic Center. The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Department will provide security at the site, and people will need to enter from the north side of the Civic Center.
“The streets are starting to get slick, so we’re encouraging everyone to stay home and hunker down,” Walker said on a call at approximately 10:30 a.m. Saturday. “It’s going to get increasingly worse over the next 24-48 hours. At this point in time, we do not have any power outages. We have all of our resources available — electricity, water, sewer, street services, police — we have full forces on the ground right now.”
Walker added that extra electrical crews have been brought in as a precaution for potentional outage issues.
Lincoln Parish Sheriff Chief Deputy Landon Hunt echoed Walker’s concerns regarding roads becoming icy.
“I would just encourage everybody to stay home and not get out unless you have to,” Hunt said. “The more traffic on the road, the more dangerous it will be for first responders and for energy line crews, paramedics and ambulances. I would encourage everybody to stay off the road. We have supplemented our manpower with deputies from our school resource and civil division for the increased call volume.
“We are prepared — we just ask please that people will stay off the road.”
