Eight NE Louisiana jail escapees back behind bars

All escapees from a mass breakout from a Lake Providence detention center have been recaptured, according to Louisiana State Police.

The last of the eight men were recaptured by a task force of law enforcement agencies on Saturday morning less than 24 hours after the escape from the Riverbend Detention Center was discovered by the East Carroll Sheriff’s Office Friday morning.

East Carroll Sheriff Wydette Williams requested the Louisiana State Police head the effort to recapture the escapees.

The apprehensions followed a Louisiana State Police “CREST” mission carried out in coordination with the East Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office, Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office, Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office, Alexandria Police Department, Yazoo City, MS Police, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana Probation and Parole, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the FBI.

State Police said CREST is “a specialized, rapid-response capability for critical missing person cases, including endangered children and vulnerable adults. The team supplements ongoing search and recovery efforts with regional expertise, investigative resources, and advanced technology. By offering a coordinated, statewide response, LSP CREST enhances public safety and provides families and communities with greater assurance that urgent cases will receive immediate, focused attention.”

The escapees were recaptured in groups of two or three at a time, state police said. Further details of the escape and how the recaptures were completed so quickly have not been released by authorities.

All the recaptured inmates were transported—at least some by helicopter—to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.

Some of the men were awaiting trial while at least one was being held as a convicted Department of Corrections inmate. Three of the men were awaiting trial for several killings in East Baton Rouge Parish. They had been transferred to East Carroll Parish three weeks ago.
