After splitting a doubleheader with Loyola Prep (W, 6-5; L, 15-5) on Sunday, the Cedar Creek Cougars dropped a 7-3 decision against St. Frederick Tuesday night.
Creek (5-11) fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but then tied the game in the top of the third on a wild pitch that allowed Kaleb Negrotto to score. Negrotto had led the frame off when he was hit by a pitch and eventually moved into scoring position on an error and a ground out.
The Warriors answered in the bottom of the frame plating three runs and then tacking on two more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage.
Negrotto led off the top of the fifth with a single and one out later, Connor Yates walked. One out later, Brett Bell drove Negrotto home with a line drive single to centerfield, cutting the deficit to 6-2. Following a Ryan Coleman single loaded the bases, Cason Floyd drew a walk to make it 6-3.
The Cougars added a run in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out fielding error by St. Frederick to close to within 6-4, but the Warriors got the run back in the bottom of the frame.
Creek threatened in the sixth as Micah Taylor walked and Floyd reached on an error with no outs. However, a double play and a strikeout ended the game.
Kade Luker took the loss, allowing four runs — three earned — on just one hit but six walks in 2.2 innings of action.
“Luker struggled with command, and we had some costly mistakes in the outfield,” said head coach Chad Yates. “We had several opportunities to tack on some more runs, but we weren’t able to get the hits.”
Bell, Coleman and Negrotto had the only hits of the game for the Cougars.
Cedar Creek will host Jonesboro-Hodge tonight at 6 p.m. and Beekman Charter Thursday at 6 p.m.
