RPD brings back DWI patrols

The Ruston Police Department is gearing up its efforts against impaired drivers by instituting a DWI patrol.

Chief Eric Watson said additional officers will be on patrol “aggressively searching for drivers under the influence.”

While the department has utilized special patrols targeting drunk and drugged drivers in the past, it has been some time since extra officers were brought in to supplement regular patrols.

Watson said the first patrol will occur this Thursday from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. Friday morning. Other patrols may occur on other nights without notice, he said.

The newly appointed chief said discussions are underway for RPD, in conjunction with the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police, to begin stationary DWI checkpoints in the next several weeks.

Motorists charged with DWI account for a significant number of the bookings by area law enforcement agencies at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center from Thursday night until early Sunday morning each week.
