Ruston Police are investigating a shooting in southeast Ruston that left one man dead on Easter Sunday.
A RPD press release reported at about 10:00 p.m. on April 20, a shooting occurred in a parking lot at 302 South Farmerville Street. The incident resulted in the death of one Ruston man and superficial injuries to five bystanders. Several of the injured individuals were transported to the local hospital via private vehicles.
At the time of the shooting, RPD officers were in a nearby parking lot responding to a large crowd. Upon hearing gunfire, officers immediately arrived at the scene and began administering first aid to the victims.
Preliminary information gathered from witnesses suggests the incident was not random but rather the result of an ongoing dispute among extended family members. The argument reportedly began earlier in the day at Mayfield Park and escalated into violence later that evening.
The investigation indicates multiple individuals involved in the altercation were armed with handguns.
RPD is conducting interviews and seeking additional witness statements. Anyone with information related to this incident is strongly encouraged to come forward and assist with the investigation.
“It is unfortunate that a day of family fun in a local park resulted in this violent act,” said a spokesperson for the Ruston Police Department.
The Lincoln Parish Journal is following this investigation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
