Ruston man tries to flee with backpack of marijuana

A Ruston man was arrested Wednesday on a traffic stop after he was found to be wanted and in possession of a large amount of marijuana.

Jacourian Straughter, 23, was charged with several offenses on October 1 after he attempted to elude an officer who attempted to stop his vehicle.

A Ruston police officer saw Straughter’s vehicle traveling on West California Avenue about 9:30 p.m. The vehicle had extremely dark window tint on its side windows.

When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it turned into an apartment complex and continued into the property. The officer activated a siren, but the vehicle failed to stop. The officer noted in a report that the driver’s door was partially open, indicating the driver was about the flee on foot. The driver then stopped the vehicle and ran through the complex.

After a brief foot chase, Straughter was taken into custody. A backpack he was wearing contained a large amount of marijuana. A search of the vehicle revealed a small bag and a medium-sized bag containing marijuana.

The total amount of marijuana was typical of someone intending to distribute it in smaller quantities, according to the officer’s report.

A records check showed Straughter was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in Ruston City Court on a traffic charge.

Straughter was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, excessive window tint, flight from an officer, resisting an officer, and the warrant.
