A Grambling State University police response to a dormitory disturbance ended with a student facing a marijuana distribution charge early Thursday, according to an arrest affidavit.
Dwayne Ross Jr., 19, of Los Angeles, was arrested by Grambling State police at 1 a.m. Sept. 24 at Holland Hall.
Officers went to a room in the dorm about a disturbance and made contact with Ross. While speaking with him to find out who was involved, an officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the dorm.
When asked for identification, Ross went to his room, where the odor grew stronger and the air appeared cloudy. Officers began to search the room.
After being read his Miranda rights, Ross admitted smoking marijuana in the room before officers arrived. Under his bed, officers found a black box with a strong odor of marijuana coming from it. Inside were several silicone bags of suspected marijuana and cash in $20, $10, $5 and $1 bills. Clear Ziploc bags were also found in the room.
Ross claimed the marijuana was his but said it was for personal use. Based on the suspected marijuana being separated into individual bags of about 3.5 grams each, along with the Ziploc bags and the mix of cash, the officer believed Ross was involved in distribution.
Ross was taken to the university police department for processing and booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, violation of the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law in a drug-free zone and possession of drug paraphernalia.
