Jorge Corona’s grand slam capped a 5-run eighth inning as Louisiana Tech pulled away for an 11-5 win over ULM Tuesday night at JC Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
Tech led 6-5 heading into the frame, but Corona’s blast powered the Bulldogs to their 31st win of the season.
The Bulldogs bullpen was integral once again as Greg Martinez failed to get out of the first inning as the Warhawks put three runs on the board.
“The final score turned out 11-5 but it was a lot closer than that,” said Tech head coach Lane Burroughs. “It was an interesting game where both starters didn’t make it out of the first inning, I don’t remember the last time I saw that. I thought Ryan Harland came out and put a stop to the storm. He is the player of the game because he calmed it down and allowed us to stay in the ball game.”
Tech answered with a two-run single by Steele Netterville in the bottom of the first. Netterville totaled three RBI in the win while Cole McConnell totaled a pair, both coming on a two-run single in the sixth that gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 6-5.
“We had some guys step up at the plate,” said Burroughs. “Cole McConnell stepped up with a left on left two-out single when we are behind by one. Jorge had the big grand slam and Landon Tomkins was huge as well. Tomkins had a big strikeout against Trace Henry, one of their best hitters who seems to always kill us.”
The Bulldogs will travel to face Northwestern State tonight at 6 p.m.
