Following their run to the 2023 Nonselect Division I State Championship title, Ruston High’s Jordan Hayes and Jadon Mayfield headline this year’s All-Lincoln Parish Journal Gridiron Team.
Hayes, a junior tailback for the Bearcats, is the LPJ Offensive Player of the Year while Mayfield, the senior linebacker, is the repeat winner of the LPJ Defensive Player of the Year.
Ruston High’s Jerrod Baugh is this year’s LPJ Coach of the Year after guiding the Bearcats to the Superdome in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. Ruston posted a 14-0 record, won the District 2-5A title and claimed the school’s ninth state football title — its first since 1990.
Hayes rushed for 1,701 yards and 20 touchdowns this season to lead a potent Bearcat rushing attack. The junior totaled nine games of 100-plus yards, including a season-high 247 yards in the win over West Monroe. Eight of his 100-yard performances came against playoff teams, including back-to-back performances in the playoffs against Walker (170 yards) and Mandeville (178 yards).
Mayfield was the leader of one of the top defenses in the state. The senior recorded more than 120 tackles on the year, including 15 tackles for loss and six sacks. Mayfield saved one of his best performances for last, recording 12 tackles in the state title game win over Zachary which also included 2.5 sacks and 3.0 tackles for loss.
