The Louisiana Tech community received an email from Tech Assistant Chief Bill Davis involving a scam for students, faculty and staff to be aware.
In the email, Davis wrote, “On three known separate occasions within the last two weeks, an unknown person has approached students on campus asking for money. On two occasions, the suspect used the victim’s phone to initiate a funds transfer and without the victim’s consent, transferred a larger than agreed upon sum of money. In one incident, the suspect led the victim to believe he was selling magazine subscriptions for a fundraising effort.”

The description given to the university’s police department in each of these incidents is a slender black male in his late teens, approximately 5’6” tall.
Davis said if anyone is approached by anyone asking for money, do not give them access to your phone, but instead contact the Louisiana Tech Police Department at 318-257-4018.
“We encourage all students, faculty, and staff to download the SafeDog campus safety app and utilize the app to call campus police,” Davis added. “When using the app to initiate contact with campus police, make sure your location services are enabled on your phone and the app will automatically provide police with your exact location when you initiate the call. If you are approached by someone like this, you can also submit a photo or video through the tip feature of the SafeDog app.”
