GARLAND, Texas — Ruston High’s cheerleading squad brought home first place in the Medium Varsity Game Day division, earning a bid to the National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Fla., in February.

“I’m just really proud of these girls,” Ruston high Spirit Group Coordinator Collin McDonald said. “They choose to do this to represent our school and community on top of cheering at all of the other sporting events throughout the year. They put in a lot of late nights, weekends, and even practice before games some weeks to get ready for competition.

“We still have a lot of work to do to get ready for Nationals but it’s always great to start the season off with a win. We have a senior heavy team this year and they have been great leaders for our younger girls to learn from going into this season.

Ruston High will travel to Lafayette to compete in another regional in December in order to prepare for the national championships

Last year, Ruston High placed second in the NHSCC.
