North Louisiana newspaper guru Tom Kelly dies at 90

Former newspaper industry publisher, editor and writer Tom Kelly has died at the age of 90.

Kelly began his newspaper career as a reporter for the Winn Parish Enterprise in December of 1949. He later served as a writer for the Natchitoches paper as well as working his way to publisher of the Ruston paper.

Most recently, he was publisher and then columnist for the Piney Woods Journal in Dodson before retiring at the age of 87.

In his first 10 years in the business, Kelly served in various positions at the weekly Sevier County-News Record in Sevierville, TN, at the Gladewater (Texas) Daily Mirror and the weekly Natchitoches Enterprise.

In 1959 he joined the newspaper as managing editor and in 1962 he became a partner and publisher of the Ruston newspaper.

After 12 years as publisher at Ruston, Kelly moved to Slidell where he managed the Slidell Daily Times.

In 2019 Kelly was awarded the Louisiana Press Association the 50 year club recognition for his service in the field of journalism.
