Both the Lady Techster volleyball and soccer teams competed this past weekend while the Bulldog golf team is set to open its slate by hosting a home event starting this Sunday.
Volleyball
Louisiana Tech won two out of three matches this past weekend at the Marriott Westchase Invitational hosted by Houston Baptist.
Tech (4-3) defeated Prairie View A&M (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) and Lamar (25-19, 25-22, 25-18) but fell to the host Huskies (21-25, 25-15, 25-8, 25-12).
Mckenzie Johnson and Jordyn Carswell earned spots on the Marriott Westchase Invitational All-Tournament Team for their performances over the weekend. Carswell recorded 28 kills and five blocks on the weekend while Johnson totaled 44 digs from her defensive specialist position.
“This was another total team effort with so many players making key plays to earn this win against a solid, well coached Lamar team,” said Tech head coach Amber McCray following Saturday’s final win. “We won this match with serving and blocking, but it was our core of defensive specialists who made some gritty plays on defense to keep rallies going and help us maintain momentum. I look forward to continuing to grow with this team each day.”
Tech heads to Ft. Worth this week to compete in the Fight in the Fort hosted by TCU. The Lady Techsters will face TCU, North Florida and Houston Baptist in the tournament.
Soccer
The Lady Techster soccer team dropped another close match on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Missouri State at Allison South Stadium in Springfield.
A second half goal by the Bears scored in the 67th minute proved to be the difference in the match as Tech (2-3-1) competed in its fifth straight road game in the last 15 days.
“It is frustrating right now because we are playing good soccer,” said interim head coach Steve Voltz. “We had two massive chances in the first half, but could not score. We have been putting ourselves in good position to score, but we are not. We are lacking a killer instinct in front of the goal.”
Tech returns to home this weekend to host Sam Houston State Friday at 7 p.m. and Little Rock Sunday at 1 p.m. at Robert Mack Caruthers Soccer Field.
Golf
The Bulldog golf team will open its season by hosting its lone home event of the year as Tech hosts the annual Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.
Head coach Matt Terry’s program welcomes 20 other collegiate golf teams to Squire Creek Golf Course for the three-day event which starts Sunday and runs through Tuesday.
The field for the 54-hole tournament includes South Alabama, Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas-Little Rock, Houston, LSU, Southern Miss, UTSA, Middle Tennessee, Abilene Christian, Francis Marion, Lamar, Rice, Texas-Arlington, High Point, Central Arkansas, WKU, Tennessee-Chattanooga, ULM, Nicholls State and Troy as well as individuals from Tennessee.
“Having 120 players coming to Squire Creek is great,” said Terry. “I would love to have student-athletes, coaches, staff and all of the LA Tech Bulldog faithful come out and support their Bulldogs. It’s always great to show other teams how good we have it at Squire Creek and Louisiana Tech.”
Sunday and Monday’s rounds start at 7:30 a.m. while Tuesday’s final round will start at 8 a.m.
The event is free for fans to attend throughout the three-day tournament. Fans can also follow up-to-date scoring through live results at Golfstat.com.
