Morris, McCarthy lead Creek Cross Country

The Cedar Creek varsity and junior high cross country teams opened their seasons this past weekend while Cougar fans can join head football coach Matt Middleton each Tuesday night at Portico for the Matt Middleton Radio show.

Cross Country

Cedar Creek opened its cross country season Saturday as the Lady Cougars finished first at The Gospel in Choudrant while the boys finished fourth overall.

Overall, the Lady Cougars finished with a team score of 33 points while the Cougars totaled 107.

Madison Morris, Taylor Ramsey and Caroline James each recorded top 10 finishes in the girls race as Morris finished second overall with a time of 20:51.99. Ramsey was seventh with a time of 21:26.55 and James eighth with a time of 21:27.18.

It was Morris’ first varsity meet.

“It was a phenomenal performance across the board,” said head coach Craig Moss. “We are young, and we have depth. It is going to be a competitive team. They are such a close unit. They support and work so well together. The encouragement and how they hold each other accountable makes this one of the strongest girls teams we have had since 2018.

“Obviously Madison had a strong first race out of gate, but I am please and happy to see Taylor back and getting her legs under her again. Marley Jinks had a debut as well in her first varsity race.”

Julianne Ensminger (12th, 22:31.07) and Jinks (14th, 22:42.69) rounded out the Lady Cougars who scored in the meet. Anna Grace Lee (15th, 22:44.79) and Kenley Brasher (33rd, 25:31.40) also raced for the Lady Cougars.

On the boy’s side, Ethan McCarthy led the Cougars, finishing fourth with a time of 17:44.65.

“Our boys were not happy with their overall team performance,” said Moss. “They are determined and driven young men and this will propel them and make them hungry to work harder so they can accomplish their goals this year.

“Ethan ran very well. I was pleased with his performance given the heat and humidity. He set the stage for a very good year.”

In addition to McCarthy’s performance, John Abram Earle (22nd, 18:54.79), Hayes Bridges (28th, 19:43.81), Cole Morganthall (32nd, 20:00.63) and Connor Johnson (35th, 20:27.36) scored in the race while Nathan Gremillion (44th, 20:52.82) also competed for the Cougars.

The junior high team also competed on Friday at Ruston Junior High with the girls finishing second overall led by Morgan Cheatwood and Mady Parkman.
