I forgot about Dora’s fear.
We have enjoyed Dora for nearly ten years. She was a puppy abandoned on the side of the road near Castor, Louisiana. She, along with her three littermates, was rescued by my spouse. We found homes for three of the puppies. We kept Dora because she was very weak and ill. Dora made it. Ten years later she looks like furry boudin. She runs our puppy kingdom and is very good at training the adults to serve her.
We made a discovery about Dora three years ago. She hates college football broadcasts. She finds Gary Danielson especially odious. We think it is the crowd noise coming through the television that bothers her. On Saturdays in the fall, she begins whining when College Game Day starts and will whine for as long as there is college football on the television. My wife reminds me that she does not whine at the Hallmark channel. So far, the Hallmark channel is not allowed on my college football television! So far.
Last year it didn’t matter. With the whole Covid no people in the stadium phenomena there was little crowd noise on the broadcasts. Dora stilled whined when Gary Danielson spoke, but that was not much. She could watch football with me all day as long as the stadium was quiet.
We learned three years ago, to mute the television during football games and Dora would be fine. I have enjoyed college football without the overpaid blowhards telling me what I am watching. It is exciting just watching the game. NBC tried this experiment about twenty years ago. They broadcast an NFL pre-season game with no one in the booth talking about what had just happened on the field. It was so successful, that NBC never did it again!
Saturday I was watching Alabama play Miami. Dora was whining in top form. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with that crazy dog. We gave her attention. We gave her treats. We followed her when she walked down the hall. (The dog also lets me know when she’s ready for bed because I usually call it quits for the day too.)
Then I remembered, the crowd noise was bugging her. I muted the broadcast. Dora was happy. I was happy. The game turned out the way I wanted.
Remember is a key word in the Old Testament. God tells His Hebrew children to remember. They are to remember who is God, and who is not God. They are to remember to care for the widow and orphans. They are to remember the commandments. They are to remember God’s steadfast love and His mighty acts on their behalf.
Their remembering became a catalyst for right living.
I forgot about Dora and college football broadcasts. She reminded me.
Has God reminded you of anything recently?
