Call results in weapons charges

A Dubach man was arrested after police received a call about a man sitting in a vehicle with a firearm.

About 8:20 a.m. Monday, Ruston Police were dispatched to Green Clinic to conduct a welfare check on a man in a SUV with a firearm in his lap. As officers arrived, a witness pointed out a vehicle occupied by a sleeping man. Officers spotted a handgun and a pipe commonly used with controlled substances inside.

Police woke the man and retrieved the firearm. A criminal history check revealed Matthew Upchurch, 37, of Dubach, was a convicted felon. The serial number of the gun had apparently been removed.

Upchurch was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
