Suspected bike thief arrested by Tech Police

A 34-year-old Ruston man was arrested by Louisiana Tech Police after officers spotted him allegedly attempting to steal bicycles from a campus apartment complex.

Casious Hendricks, of Gilman Street, was observed on surveillance video about 8:30 p.m. last Friday loitering around the bicycle rack at the Hutcheson apartment complex on Everett Street.

Louisiana Tech has experienced numerous bicycle thefts recently. Typically, thieves cut the chain securing the bicycle to a bike rack and ride it away.

Tech Officer Grant Kleinpeter and Sgt. Allen Brown responded to Everett Street and located Hendricks who Kleinpeter recognized as wanted in other recent bike thefts.

Hendricks was placed under arrest on two theft warrants. During a search, a backpack was found under Hendricks’s shirt containing bolt cutters. He also appeared to be intoxicated.

Further examination of surveillance video allegedly shows Hendricks stealing a bicycle on campus just minutes before the officers located him.

Hendrick was booked for theft under $1,000 on two warrants, an additional charge of theft under $1,000, a bench warrant for failure to appear in court on a criminal mischief charge, possession of burglary tools, and disturbing the peace by public intoxication.
