Ruston roars to life in second half to advance

RUSTON, La. — It’s hard to believe it was a tie ball game late in the second quarter at 3-3.

The Bearcats followed up with five unanswered touchdowns before Covington finally scored again to make the score 38-10 with 11:44 to go in the ball game. A final touchdown by junior running back Dyson Fields with 3:16 left to go in the game from 22 yards out put the final score 45-10.

Fields finished with another sensational night for the Bearcats with 251 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

“It seems like we settled in towards the end of the second quarter,” Ruston head coach Jerrod Baugh said. “I wish we hadn’t had the fumble or some of the penalties, but we executed well enough at the end of the first half. We didn’t shoot ourselves (in the second half) in the foot, and offensively, we were able to get some things going. We got some stuff to go out and practice and go get straight for next Friday.”

Ruston scored its first touchdown of the night with 30 seconds left in the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown rush by senior fullback Devian Wilson to give Ruston a 10-3 lead after the teams traded field goals for the first scores of the night. Covington committed the first half to ball control on offense to keep it away from the Bearcats but were unsuccessful in finding the end zone in the first two quarters.

Ruston rushed for a total of 383 yards on the ground with all six touchdowns coming from the run game. Wilson finished with three touchdowns on 114 yards rushing.

Junior quarterback Jaden Osborn threw for 126 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground, as well.

Senior Brady Beason connected on a 39-yard field goal in the first half.

The Bearcats scored 28 points in the third quarter alone.

Ruston will be back at home for Round 2 of the 2021 playoffs to take on the 12-seeded Benton Tigers at James Field at Garrett Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
