Social media post leads to theft charges

A Dubach man is in custody after Lincoln Parish deputies found a stolen all-terrain vehicle and trailer and other items on his property Sunday.

On Friday, the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Department investigated a report of a stolen Polaris Ranger side-by-side ATV and trailer from a residence in the parish. The thief’s vehicle was captured on a nearby security camera.

The Sheriff’s Office placed photos of the suspect’s vehicle on social media. Multiple tips were received naming Michael Thompson as the suspect and that his vehicle matched the photographs. Investigators learned that Thompson had even photographed the stolen ATV in his own yard attempting to sell it on social media.

Sunday morning, a search warrant was executed at Thomas’s residence on LA Highway 545. Three trailers were located on the property, including two confirmed to be stolen and the third suspected to be stolen. The Ranger ATV was not immediately located, but items that had been inside it at the time of the theft were located. Thompson was located on the property and taken into custody. He took deputies to the Polaris Ranger at another location. He also confessed to stealing the other trailer from the same road on March 16.

Thompson was charged with two counts of felony theft over $5,000, felony theft greater than $1,000, illegal possession of stolen things greater than $1,000, and three warrants held by the Sheriff’s Office for failure to appear in court on issuing worthless check charges.

Bail was set at $64,500.
