Creek’s Thomas, Lincoln Prep’s Payne earn all-state honors

Lincoln Prep’s Dmitry Payne and Cedar Creek’s AJ Thomas headline the Lincoln Parish honorees on the 2021 Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A All-State team released today.

Imani Marcel (Lincoln Prep), Ty’Rell Simmons (Lincoln Prep), Seth Smith (Cedar Creek), Carson Riley (Cedar Creek) and Bryce Rushing (Cedar Creek) all earned honorable mention all-state honors.

Calvary Baptist quarterback Landry Lyddy, a Louisiana Tech signee, was named the Offensive Player of the Year on the team.

The LSWA Class A Coach of the Year was former Tech wide receiver Richie Casey, who led Homer to the state title.

Payne was one of the most electric players in the state and without a doubt one of the most dangerous return men in Louisiana. He returned 27 kickoffs on the year for 1,231 yards and seven – yes seven – touchdowns.

He averaged 46 yards per kickoff return and helped lead the Panthers to the Class A state playoffs, including a first-round victory. He was named all-District 1-1A after a performance that LP coach Glen Hall called “special”.

Thomas was one of the keys to the Cougars defense that set school records for fewest points allowed per game during the regular season. Thomas recorded He recorded 53 tackles on the season, including 18 tackles for loss, five sacks and 12 quarterback hurries.

Thomas spearheaded a defense that allowed only nine points or fewer in seven of its nine regular season games and leading the program to the Division IV playoffs. He was named first team all-District 2-1A.

Lyddy posted another prolific passing season to earn LSWA’s Outstanding Offensive Player honors. The 6-1, 185-pound Lyddy signed early with Louisiana Tech and will report to Ruston for spring practices. He passed for 4,247 yards and 53 touchdowns on the season while leading the Cavaliers to the Division IV semifinals.
