Female charged with robbery, attempted arson

A Ruston female was arrested on charges of simple robbery and aggravated attempted arson Jan. 2.

A Ruston Police Department officer arrested Ameka Thompson, 52, of Ruston for simple robbery. An individual stated that she was in the parking lot at 604 Martin Luther King Drive when Thompson asked for a cigarette. When the individual refused, Thompson attacked her, striking her several times with a closed fist. The individual stated Thompson then grabbed the pack of cigarettes and left the scene with the cigarettes.

Thompson initially refused to speak to the RPD officer about the incident, but after being taken to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center, she stated that a male had tried to rob the individual and Thompson never physically touched the individual. Thompson said she chased the individual, who dropped the cigarettes, and Thompson then took the cigarettes. According to the affidavit, this is in contrast to statements by the witness who called RPD and the individual, who also suffered a small cut above her left eye in the incident.

Thompson was also charged with aggravated attempted arson. According to the affidavit, Thompson intentionally set fire to newspapers inside a residence on Turner Street and made a statement that she was going to burn it to the ground and kill the occupants inside the residence. Another person present was able to eliminate the flames before any damage was done.

Thompson also had an active warrant with the Ruston Police Department for entering or remaining after forbidden.

Bond was set at $33,000.
