Kiwanis announces Outstanding Educator of the Year

On behalf of the Ruston Kiwanis Club, the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce has announced that Marilyn Hyams, Cedar Creek School math teacher, is the recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Educator of the Year Award.

Marilyn Orr Hyams is a Lincoln Parish native, the daughter of Dr. Virgil and Myrtis Orr. She attended elementary school at A. E. Phillips and graduated from Ruston High School in 1969. She attended Louisiana Tech University where she majored in math education, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. While at Tech, she also met her future husband, William H. Hyams as he was her calculus instructor and they married shortly after her graduation. Marilyn and Bill are the parents of two children, Toni Hyams Crawford and Daniel G. Hyams and they have five grandchildren.

Marilyn devoted the early years of their married life to rearing their two children. When Bill accepted a position with what is now the University of Louisiana, Monroe, Marilyn decided to further her education by obtaining a Master’s degree in math education media, graduating from ULM in 1979. While at ULM she also served as an instructor in the Math Department. Marilyn began her teaching career in 1983, serving as a math and science instructor at Choudrant High School until she retired from the Lincoln Parish School System in 2002. After a short stint in retirement, Marilyn was recruited by Cedar Creek school to teach math, where she is still currently serving. Four recommendation letters reflect the same accolades, that Marilyn is respected and admired by her teaching peers, loved by her students and is always willing to provide support whether in the form of tutoring before or after school or cheering for her students at athletic events. Many of her former students have moved on to careers as math instructors based on the example and commitment she demonstrated during the course of their education.

Marilyn attends Temple Baptist Church where she serves as a pre-school Sunday school teacher, a position she has filled since 1997. Hobbies that she enjoys include traveling to National Parks and watching sporting events.
