Diamond Dogs dominate HBU in sweep

Louisiana Tech got solid performances on the mound and exploded for 40 runs as the Bulldogs swept a three-game series from Houston Baptist this weekend at JC Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

Tech won by scores of 22-2, 12-3 and 6-0. Tech (11-5) has won six of its last seven as it heads into a Tuesday night match-up against ULM in Monroe.

Houston Baptist entered the weekend having won four in a row, including three victories over 23rd ranked Sacramento State the previous weekend in California.

“We needed this sweep and we went out and got it,” said Tech head coach Lane Burroughs. “I didn’t think we played particularly well today. One of the things I was disappointed with today was our energy. We did enough to win and that is what good teams do.

“They didn’t score a run and I thought our pitching was just okay. We got into a lot of traffic, and our command wasn’t great. That’s what I told our team is that we expect a lot out of them. It was good see Jarret (Whorff) pitch deeper into the ballgame and that’s the deepest his pitched all year.”

Tech banged out 41 hits in the series, including 22 extra base hits.

Jonathan Fincher, Ryan Jennings and Jarret Whorff all recorded quality starts for the Bulldogs, picking up wins while the Tech bullpen was stellar. Tech arms struck out 26 and walked just 11 in 27 innings of work.

Following Tuesday’s game at ULM, the Bulldogs will travel to San Antonio to face UTSA in a three-game Conference USA series.
