Longtime retired sheriff passes away

Wayne Houck, a Lincoln Parish law enforcement legend, passed away Wednesday from an apparent heart attack.

Houck served as Lincoln Parish sheriff from 1980 to 2004. He was elected to six consecutive terms, often without opposition.

The Hico native started his career with the Ruston Police Department in 1963. He later served with the sheriff’s department before returning to Ruston PD in 1976. He was first elected sheriff in 1979.

Houck’s was the longest serving sheriff in Lincoln Parish’s 149-year history.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Kilpatrick’s of Ruston.
