Teachers’ 14th check to be larger than last year

Parish teachers have another reason to look forward to the summer — their 14th check will be a bit larger than last year’s.

Announced at last night’s school board meeting, for certified staff, the check will be $1,166 more than last year’s; and for salaried support personnel, the check will be $583 more than last year.

Ricky Durrett, school board superintendent, and Juanita Duke, chief financial officer, said the increase was due to the sales tax revenue.

“We wanted to support those teachers like we said we would when we asked for these taxes,” Durrett said.

In other business, the school board voted to approve contracts for proposals for new technology in the classroom.

The request for the new technology in the classrooms includes interactive panels, desktop computers and laptop computers.

“We’re receiving proposals now,” said Debbie Pender, technology coordinator. “We’re requesting the board grant us permission to go ahead and grant contracts to the vendors following evaluations of the proposals submitted to us for the above mentioned items.”

The board unanimously approved the request.

The board also approved permission to advertise for bids for the purchase of new buses.

Additionally, Durrett reminded the board that a job fair will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. April 19 in the STEM building.
