Physical education is taught throughout the states in grade school. The importance of physical education, however, is crucial for the growth of youth.
Ruston Junior High PE teacher Mandy Young said PE is almost interdisciplinary in its elements.
“PE provides an environment for students to be physically active while developing motor skills, enhancing knowledge, learning strategies and how to work with others,” Young said. “At RJHS our health and PE department works closely with our science department and other departments to incorporate cross-curriculum learning.”
Physical education aids in the growth of a young adult’s mind in a way that is not restricted to a classroom or desk, Young said. Additionally, it gives a time during school where play meets learning.
“We incorporate a variety of activities and sports to keep the students interested in learning and participating,” Young said. “We incorporate activities they are familiar with as well as introducing new games and activities.”
Schools that establish physical education provide students with the confidence and ability to be more active throughout their lives, Young said. PE helps students develop their minds, a healthy body and a healthy functioning brain.
