A Baldwin, La., man was arrested Saturday on numerous charges after Grambling State University police spotted him with a pistol.
GSU officers responded to a disturbance on the West Campus about 12:45 a.m. Saturday morning. They reportedly saw Tyron Charles, 21, walking out of a building, talking loudly, and holding a pistol.
Charles ran from the officers with the pistol in his hand. As officers neared, Charles threw the pistol and he was arrested. During a search after the arrest, a clear plastic baggie containing suspected marijuana was found in Charles’s pants leg.
A Glock 43 9mm pistol with an extended 12-round magazine and one in the chamber was recovered.
Charles was taken to the GSU Police Department for further investigation. While handcuffed, he fled out the building’s back door while still handcuffed. He was quickly captured and transported to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
Charles was booked for possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, simple escape, aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm in a firearm-free zone, illegal use of a firearm during the commission of a drug felony, threatening a public official, and possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone.
On Monday additional charges were added for bench warrants from an apparent previous arrest. The warrants from Third District Court included possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a stolen firearm, illegal carrying of a weapon, and improper modified exhaust.
Charles remains in custody with bail set at $155,000. It is unclear from detention center records if the bail amount also includes the bench warrants.
