North Central Louisiana Arts Council and the Black Creative Circle have partnered together to paint a mural on the east end of Ruston in a project titled Lift Every Voice
The mural will be painted on the wall of the Greenwood Recreation Center, better known as, The Blue Gym.
The project will kick off from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, when a short film, A New Color” will be shown. The film discusses an artist who created mural art in her own neighborhood.
Following the film, participants will discuss what the community would like to see on the mural and how the community can get involved.
Celebrated and local artists Vitus Shell and Drek Davis will lead the mural design and painting efforts over the summer and fall, with help from local universities and K-12 students.
This event will also introduce the four weeks of free art workshops offered to children, which include culinary, visual, podcast and literary arts.
Each workshop will be limited to 25 participants and will be offered to kids age 13-17. During each workshop, there will be alternate activities, such as sidewalk art, for younger children outside of the Greenwood Rec Center.
The workshops will all culminate in the Greenwood Community Celebration on Sept. 17 where participants will have the opportunity to set up what they have created in an art gallery and art market.
