The Ruston Police Department has issued a warning for local residents about a phone scam with individuals claiming to be the police.
RPD released information yesterday stating that one or more individuals are making phone calls to citizens and are identifying themselves as officers from the Ruston Police Department. The caller usually states that the citizen has a warrant and then requests personal information over the phone. This is a scam.
This type of scam is common, according to the Federal Trade Commission. According to the FTC’s website, “Scammers might pretend to be law enforcement or a federal agency. They might say you’ll be arrested, fined, or deported if you don’t pay taxes or some other debt right away. The goal is to scare you into paying. But real law enforcement and federal agencies won’t call and threaten you.”
RPD suggests individuals remain alert and avoid sharing personal information with these callers. If anyone has questions regarding a call received, call RPD at 318-255-4141.
