Shooting suspect in custody

A Ruston man is being held at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center after he allegedly shot at his girlfriend and her young son Wednesday afternoon.

Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s deputies were sent to Nutmeg Drive Wednesday regarding a shooting. The victim said her boyfriend, Gary J. Cooper Jr,, 31, had shot at her and her young son. The victim said they had been arguing before Cooper tried to force himself into the residence they share. Cooper became upset and fired a single shot at the victim and her son with a 9mm pistol.

Several witnesses confirmed the victim’s story. Cooper then allegedly took the victim’ s vehicle without permission.

Deputies recovered a bullet fragment outside the victim’ s residence. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Lincoln Parish deputies and Ruston Police officers began a search for the victim’s vehicle. Deputy Sergeant J. Johnson found the vehicle on Bernard Street in Ruston. The vehicle was stopped, and Cooper jumped from the back seat and fled on foot.

After a short chase, Sgt. Johnson deployed his TASER. Cooper resisted attempts to take him in the custody and fought until Johnson and Ruston police officers could restrain him.

Cooper was questioned at the Sheriff’s Office but denied being on Nutmeg Drive at any point that day.

Nutmeg Drive is located just outside the Ruston city limits off U.S. Highway 80.

Cooper was booked for two counts of attempted first degree murder, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and resisting an officer by force.

Cooper’s bail amount was not available at press time.
