Riding a four-game winning streak, Ruston High School will open District 2-5A play tonight against Alexandria Senior High at Trojan Stadium. The Bearcats enter the contest 4-1 on the season and ranked no. 5 by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

“I know I sound like a broken record every week, but the first five games have come down to the end of the game and finding a way to win,” Ruston head coach Jerrod Baugh said. “I’ve been pleased with our kids being able to do that. Eventually though, we’ve got to be able to take another step forward and figure out how to get and stretch a lead. I think we have missed some opportunities to be able to take multiple score leads and make it where it doesn’t come down to the end of the game.”

Ruston took a 27-21 win last week against long-standing foe Neville, capping off a very difficult non-district schedule for the Bearcats. Senior quarterback Jaden Osborn threw 190 yards on 9-of-18 passing with three touchdowns, all to senior wide receiver Aaron Jackson against the Tigers.

The Trojans come into the contest on a three-game winning streak of their own, most recently with a 66-8 win over 2A Green Oaks out of Shreveport.

“Coach (Thomas) Bachman always does a great job with their offense,” Baugh said. “They had another offensive coordinator from the last couple of years take a head coaching job, so Bachman is back calling plays for the offense. They always prepare a quarterback who has a really good knowledge base of what they’re trying to do offensively. In the past few years, they’ve gone through a period where they threw the ball all over the place, but they have now done a really good job of transforming into a team with a really solid running game.”

Last season, the Bearcats beat the Trojans by a couple of touchdowns in Ruston 37-23. ASH beat Ruston 17-13 the last time these teams played in Trojan Stadium back in 2019.

“This Trojan team has really good players in skill spots,” Baugh added. “Last year, they played us really well against our running game. They return a couple of good kids on the defensive line. They’re a really solid football team that is well coached.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and can be heard on Z107.5 FM and streamed live on BearcatNationNetwork.com.
