Youths become ill from drug-tainted candy

A Ouachita Parish youth was arrested for allegedly giving drug-tainted candy to children at school.

A Ouachita Parish youth was taken into custody Thursday for allegedly giving presumed drug-tainted candy to three children at school.

Ouachita Parish sheriff’s deputies responded to East Ouachita Middle School northeast of Monroe Thursday regarding three youths who had become ill and were undergoing medical care.

Deputies learned all three had consumed a homemade candy possibly containing a controlled substance. The juvenile who allegedly provided the candy to the three ill children was the identified and located. He was found to be in possession of homemade candy he had brought from home.

The candy appeared to have been made from cereal and marijuana and indicated positive for MDMA, a narcotic related to methamphetamine commonly called ecstasy. The candy will be tested at a crime lab to confirm the nature of the substance.

The juvenile was taken into custody and booked at the Green Oaks Detention Center for possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and possession of a controlled substance in a school drug free zone.

The three ill juveniles were treated at a local hospital and released. Investigation into the incident is continuing.
